Monday Medallion Step 7

Welcome to step 7 of the Medallion Sew Along for my new book Scrap Quilt Secrets! All of the patterns and pieces for this quilt can be found in the book. Detailed instructions on cutting, pressing and sewing along with diagrams and step by step instructions are all found in the book. This sew along will direct you to the page and item in the book for those instructions. If you need a copy of the book, you can order it here.

Step 1

Make one Star block B from page 73.

Step 2

Make 20 four patch units found on page 15.
Special instructions for pressing can be found on page 94.
Sew 2 rows of 4 blocks and sew them to the sides of the star.
Sew 2 rows of 6 blocks and sew them to the top and bottom of the unit.
Press the seams toward the four patch border.

Step 3

Make 28 Triangle Border blocks found on page 14.
Special instructions for strip piecing can be found on page 95.
Carefully arrange the blocks so that they are alternating as shown.
Sew two rows of 6 triangles and two rows of 8 triangles.
Sew the rows of 6 to opposite sides of the quilt top.
Sew the rows of 5 to the remaining two sides of the quilt top.
Press  the seams toward the four patch border.

Step 4

Make 20 Border Cornerstones (not the sashing size) found on page 75.
Arrange the blocks as shown, alternating the dark fabrics on the sides and tops of the blocks.
Sew two rows of 4 blocks and two rows of 6 blocks.
Sew the rows of 4 blocks to opposite sides of the quilt top.
Sew the rows of 6 blocks to the remaining two sides.
Press the seams toward the outer border.

Step 5

Make 40 four patch units found on page 54.
Special instructions for pressing can be found on page 94.
Sew two rows of 12 four patches together and press the seams the same way as shown on page 94.
Sew these rows to the sides of the quilt top.
Sew two rows of 14 four patch units and repeat for the remaining two sides.

Step 6

Make 32 blocks of the 'O Block' found on page 28.
Sew two rows of 7 blocks and two rows of 9 blocks.
Sew the rows of 7 blocks to opposite sides of the quilt top.
Sew the rows of 9 blocks to the remaining twos sides of the quilt top.
Press the seams toward the O Block border.

Step 7

Make 4 borders of the Crazy Daisy quilt found on page 32.
Cut the border background pieces 54" long (measure your quilt top and cut the borders accordingly.)
Sew two borders to opposite sides of the quilt top.
Make 4 pinwheel blocks using the units on page 31.
Sew the pinwheel blocks to the ends of the two remaining borders.
Sew these borders to the remaining twos sides of the quilt top.
Press the seams toward the borders.

NOTE: I simply used fusible for the applique and will machine quilt it down just inside the edges of each piece. This will secure the applique and quilt it all in one step. I then like to add fun quilting in the background either by hand or machine for additional texture.

Only two more steps until we complete this medallion quilt! I am having so much fun sewing these elements from different quilts all together and I hope you are too. Stay tuned for the big finish in two weeks!

Enjoy every stitch,
Diane
