10 Minute Tip

Next time you only have a few minutes to play with fabric, or you can't sit down to sew for some reason (as if!) but you want to do something creative....PULL FABRIC FOR A PROJECT. I like to choose a book or pattern that I know I want to make, and then start selecting fabrics that I think will work. It is a great way to decide on a color scheme if you are unsure. I choose a few fat quarters or scraps, and then I'll be ready to make a test block. If the choices look good in my test block, chances are I will like the whole quilt!

Also, when selecting fabrics, I find that if I photograph (just quickly with my phone) my selection, it really helps. Somehow, I can see what doesn't belong much better in a photo than in real life. Also, this works with choosing borders, or bindings etc. That's right, I whip out my phone and start snapping pics in the quilt shop. My local shop owners totally know I do this, as I often ask them to look at the photos for their opinion as well. Though you might want to ask if you think it might offend anyone. I just don't want to hear any crazy stories about folks getting tossed out of shops and find out it was my fault! Ack.

Enjoy every stitch!

  1. I have that book! I had planned on making that quilt but at the time I bought it I was working on my second Dear Jane quilt - by time I finished hand piecing the second DJ I was totally over my need to piece these tiny pieces and the book has been sitting patiently waiting for me to pick it up :) same with the second of her books Just Totally Nuts so something like that!
