Welcome to today's stop on the American Made Brand Blog Hop. I'm so excited to be a part of this fun 50 state blog tour. As a long time resident of Georgia, I was thrilled to be asked to make a block for my state. I am also a huge fan of history, especially quilting history, so I started my research immediately. I found so much information but I kept coming back to my favorite quilt from Georgia made by a former slave named Harriet Powers in 1886.
I love this quilt for so many reasons, and I knew I could borrow her "style" of freeform applique that looks as if it is tossed onto the quilt. I chose her sashing and cornerstone style as well. Once I added the sashing and cornerstones I didn't have much space left to work with. So I quickly realized I would have to layer my elements.
I chose 7 colors ( light khaki #11, dark brown #16, taupe #62, dark taupe #63, orange #36, dark orange # 37, and olive #24 ) that I thought would look nice together and give a cheerful look to the block. Then I drew the peach and the letters on paper. I fused the fabrics to a light fusible and cut out the shapes.
I placed the shapes on the block in several different arrangements until I was happy with it.
Then I fused the shapes in place and stitched around the edges in a very tiny zig zag with matching threads. I wanted it to look a bit primitive but still be durable.
These fabrics were fantastic to work with and the colors are amazing. I especially love the dark brown I chose for the letters. I have been to Georgia several times, mostly for football games at the Georgia Dome. The Chick Fil A bowl in 2009 was a good one -- such a great venue and my team got a nice win.

ReplyDeleteJust love your license plate! Fantastic! We usually just drive through Georgia, although we did spend a long weekend once in Atlanta ... and other long weekend in Savannah ... although we frequently take day trips over to Savannah or Tybee when we visit Hilton Head.

I used to drive through Georgia on my way to visit my folks when they were living in Florida. I made the trip a couple of times each years until they passed. Wanted to visit some of the spots on the way to Florida, but somehow never had enough time to do that.

ReplyDeleteYes I have been to Georgia at the airport on my way to Florida. I recently found out that I have distance relatives that live in Georgia - my mom's father's side. When a friend of my sister (who lives in GA) did a family tree search she found GA relatives that fought in the American Revolution! Now that was exciting!

ReplyDeleteI have drove through Georgia on my way home from Florida. We had rented a van to go to Florida for a funeral and we were in Macon County at a gas station and my son wanted to drive. He had to back up and he hit the gas pump. Not a big hit but he hit it. Of course they called the police but not tickets or damage was done.

ReplyDeleteHave never been to Georgia, but love your quilt! Bright and cheery! I also enjoy history...and have been learning about quilt history (thanks to Eleanor burns starting me on it) from the civil war era. Wow...what a quilt meant back in those days is amazing! Especially the Underground Railroad's use of the quilt. Quilters did so much with so little back then, I almost feel bad trying to do what they did with all the amazing ammenities that we have these days while they did the same thing..with next to nothing!

Since I live just across the border in SC, I have been to Georgia frequently. Augusta is just a short drive away but I have enjoyed many vacations on Jekyll Island as well as the beautiful north Georgia mountains. Calloway Gardens are beautiful, Stone Mountain impressive and Atlanta is overwhelming for this small town girl.

ReplyDeleteI haven't been to Georgia since becoming an adult but did roam the state with my parents on vacation. It's beautiful and one of the things I remember is the State Capitol Building and it's dome. I really think seeing it was what got me started on wanting to see every state's capitol building. Only 8 more to go!

Since I was pretty sure we would be leaving I tried to see everything during those years and I loved every bit of what I saw. We had a Georgia peach while there, his name is Jacob. Yes, I have been to Georgia many times. When I was in college Hot-Lanta was THE place to party! Went to a big road rally once and saw Paul Newman in person! Fun memories.

ReplyDeleteI went to Atlanta in 1973 with my high school band. We rode buses from the Texas panhandle to participate in a music festival at 6 Flags over Atlanta. It was spring & flowers were blooming & I thought it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen. Would love to go back some spring!

I visited my sister who used to live in Marietta, and we visited several sites, including the "big chicken" on Peachtree Street. Then we went to a couple of fabric stores. After that she was turned into a quilter too! I love your block. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes, I've been to Georgia several times. We took our grandson, a couple of years ago, for a week to Helen and the surrounding area. He was 3 yrs old and really enjoyed visiting the Babyland General Hospital where the Cabbage Patch babies are born. He got to hold one of the newborn babies from the nursery and he so seriously said, "she's heavy". We plan to visit that area again because it was so nice and peaceful along the river where we stayed in a Condo for the week. Thanks for the chance to win.

ReplyDeleteMy son and dil were stationed at Robbins AFB for four years, so I've eaten lots of Georgia peaches! We loved visiting them and enjoyed traveling around the state. Yes, I've been to Georgia. I'm in western NY and have traveled through Georgia by car on numerous occasions, stopovers in the Atlanta airport also on numerous occasions, but I've also visited Atlanta three times and Columbus once. Your license plate is perfect fo Georgia.

ReplyDeleteI visited Atlanta by accident. By accident I mean that I missed a connecting flight and had about 20 hours to explore the city, in the middle of a cold winter, in tropical vacation attire. My friend and I navigated the public transit system, and ran from sun-spot to sun-spot to stay warm before finding a neat history museum and heading back to the airport.

ReplyDeleteI visited Savannah once for a couple hours on the way to somewhere else. It was gorgeous. Lush flowers, old homes, and a beautiful waterfront. We took a city tour that showcased the places featured in the book Midnight in Garden of Good and Evil. I'd recommend the book and the city! Thanks for the chance to win this gorgeous fabric. ReplyDeleteI spent my honeymoon (October, 1988) in the North Georgia Mountains, in a town called Helen. It was such a great trip! We stayed in a little bed and breakfast, had a wonderful meal at the Hofbrau Haus, and were lucky enough to enjoy Oktoberfest that year. The changing of the trees was amazing! Thanks for bringing back the memories and for the great giveaway!

ReplyDeleteI drove through Georgia in 2007, when I moved from NY to Florida. Much earlier, my potholders were in Georgia at the Peachtree Mall in Atlanta, sold by a friend who was doing an extensive road trip. I love your Georgia peach!
ReplyDeleteMy family drove through on the way to Florida when I was a teenager. We stayed in Macon. I thought Georgia was a beautiful state.

ReplyDeleteLike a bunch of other commenters I passed through, but once many years ago I spent the night on Jekyll Island and had the best seafood I've ever had.
