The 1718 Coverlet is complete! (and a give away!!!)

(Yes I realize this photo is crappy! My sincere apologies.)

I have completed the 1718 Coverlet and I am happy with the quilt top. It is fun, and super busy, and so completely unlike anything I have ever done before (or will ever do again for that matter!)

I did lots of fussy cutting. I had fun putting little butterflies in dots, and lining up stripes. It was fun, and I never took it too seriously.

I mean striped feet and bills on a patterned swan are fun, right? And that background fabric, that's kind of crazy. But I'm so glad I used up this fabric that had been 'aging' in my stash for over ten years.

I used all needle turn applique. And often I combined it with machine piecing in one block. It was my own method and probably a little unconventional, but hey, it works! (For me at least!)

I was pretty sure these star blocks were going to kill me, but they didn't. They actually turned out pretty well. Not all points are exact, but they are pretty darn close! I was just happy that it all ended up flat. That was the greatest achievement in my opinion!

The simple pieced blocks remain my favorite. They show off the fabric the best. They also involved much less cursing. *wink*

I'm so happy I plugged along and kept going with this one. The quilt along group is only about half way finished. I stink at following rules. Sorry! I just have to do what moves me and this quilt kept calling my name. I have it layered and I've begun quilting it. This stage could take a while, but I am still enjoying it, and that's all that really matters.

In my excitment of starting this quilt, I actually purchased two copies of the book. I would like to give one copy away to someone who would like to give this quilt a try. If you would like a chance to win this book, just comment with what type of fabric you will use, or why you are inspired to attempt it. Or just tell me how much you like my quilt, that will work too! I told you I'm not good with 'rules'. LOL I'll choose a winner on Friday.

Enjoy every stitch!
Diane

  3. Every time I go to JoAnn's I pick up this book but haven't bought it yet. It is a very interesting quilt. It is because of your quilt I became interested in making this one. You did a good job making this quilt and of keeping the colors similar to the original. I believe I would make this one out of my reproduction stash but it may be fun to shock things up a bit and use Kaffe. Wouldn't that be cool. I would like to try

  4. You did a wonderful job with this quilt. I love your fabric choices and the way they set each block off. I might try and do it in just three colors and see how that turns out. I've always thought that red, green and white would be pretty. A few test blocks would let me know for sure and if that didn't work out then I could go with reproduction fabrics. Rina

  7. Your version came out great - and as I've said before, I love your color/fabric choices! I thought about starting my own version since my conversion to back-baste applique, but I felt totally out of my depth when it came to colors and fabrics. I look forward to seeing how you approach the quilting of this baby!

  8. It is the kind of quilt I would like to give a try. I would use my stash because that is what the lady that made it first would have used. What was available. Thanks for sharing your quilt. I love it.

  13. Wow - great quilt! I admire your determination to get it done!!! Awesome! I would probably do it in my fav batiks - have a ton of fat 1/8 and fat 1/4s that would be perfect to use in it! (most of which are quite bright and intense!) :)

  14. What a beautiful quilt! I love it, and I love quilts like this that keep you looking at them. I think that I would do the quilt in blue and creams... I seem to be in a blue and cream phase right now. sarah@forrussia.org

  17. Wow - I can't believe how quickly you finished this quilt! If I were ever to go off the deep end and decide I needed to tackle this project (haha), it would have to be in Civil War repro fabrics, as that is about all I have! Congrats to you for completing this top - it really is a huge accomplishment!

  20. Thanks for doing this giveaway. If I were to make this quilt, I'd do it in CW repros. Not true to the time period, but not super contemporary. Your quilt is really wonderful!
