January 2021 Book List

The Midnight Library

I rejoined Book of the Month Club even though I have shelves of books I still haven't read. Please don't judge, books are like fabric, I just can't resist them. So this was the first book I ordered because it had gotten so many rave reviews. Well they weren't wrong! I loved this book. I loved the concept and the strategy and the writing and characters. It is different from any book I've ever read and while I was concerned that it might be hard to follow (the main character is 'almost' dead and she gets to choose other parallel lives that would have existed had she made other choices). It's so fun to follow and see the same characters show up in different versions with different results. It was also an easy book to get lost in. I read it in a few days. Read this book, you won't be sorry!

Outlawed

The was the second book in the January Book of the Month Club box that I chose. I had also heard lots of talk about this book and I'm so glad I read it! It was a page turner, and I finished it in just a couple of days. It takes place in the late 1800's in the frontier of America. The story is about how women who were not accepted by society for various reasons were cast out to fend for themselves. This group of women found each other and created a 'gang' to protect and provide for themselves. I loved their courage and bravery through some of the worst of circumstances. I was cheering for them and proud of them at the same time. It was filled with hard topics and tough decisions but I loved every word. I highly recommend this book for anyone who doesn't mind a little violence and brutality. It's an amazing story with some truly inspiring characters.

Magic Lessons

As with all Alice Hoffman books, this one captivated me from the first sentence. I love the story and the familiar characters and learning about the origins of the story from Practical Magic is like visiting an old friend and reminiscing about the past. I love every book she's written and devour them all!

Enjoy every story!

Diane

  2. Thanks for these reviews. Ive been reading more lately, which is a good thing. I used to read 5-6 books a month and then I started quilting and reading went out the window. Currently reading Queens Gambit, and I was captured from the first few pages. I haven't seen the tv version. I just finished American Dirt. It was good too.

Loved that characters and love the 'uncertainity'. Magic Lessons was great but then Hoffman is one of my favorites. OUTLAWED in now on my 'list'. Thanks as always!
