10 Minute Tip

SCRAP ORGANIZATION

The most commonly asked question I get is… HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE YOUR SCRAPS?

I love this question so much! It means that quilters want to USE their scraps and keeping them in a way that gives them easy access will help ! This is my method of organizing and storing fabric scraps.

  1. I always cut my scraps into usable sizes. If I have uneven or odd shaped pieces, I trim them into strips by sizes I use most often (1 1/2” , 2” and 2 1/2”.)

  2. If my scraps can’t be trimmed into strips, I cut them into squares (same sizes as strips because that’s what I use most.)

  3. If my scraps are smaller than my strip sizes but I can’t bear to toss them, they go into my BITS basket for small applique or hexies or collage.

  4. I PRESS ALL OF MY SCRAPS. I find that pressed fabrics make for easier viewing and take up less room.

  5. Once my scraps are cut into the usable sizes, I store them in stackable bins according to size. All 2” scraps together, etc.

  6. I tend to fold the strips in half to make for tidy storage. I will often sort the scraps by color once they are sorted by size, only if I have a lot of one color.

  7. I purge my scraps! If I find I’ve used a fabric or rejected it multiple times, I let it go. I either donate it, give it to a friend or toss it.

  8. If I start a project with scraps, but need to add something from my stash I go to my precuts or fat quarters. The more the merrier!

  9. I have a designated scrap basket, once it starts overflowing, I spend some time pressing and cutting and restocking my bins.

I hope this helps! Leave a comment if you have a preferred method of storing or organizing your scraps. And remember, the only perfect system is the one that works for you!

Enjoy every stitch! Diane
